There is a legend about the formation of Mashhad. The legend tells about Imam Ali bin Musaar Ridha (Imam Reza) who was poisoned by the son of the Baghdad caliph. On the very place where imam was killed, a mausoleum and a village were built, which gradually began to expand and has now become the second largest city with over two-million population. The name Mashhad was first mentioned in the X century.
The main attraction of the city is the Imam Reza complex located in the heart of the city. Impressive in size and beauty, the mausoleum is surrounded by a large square with tombs of famous imams, a library, a school and a place for pilgrims to get rest.
Another attraction of Mashhad is the mausoleum of Nadir Shah, which was built at the burial site of one of the Safavid dynasty shahs. Mashad became the capital of the country during the reign of Nadir Shah.
